One of the most popular exhibits at any zoo is the bear. That is because these large, mysterious animals are a majestic vision to behold. They take our breath away and transport our imagination to a place where we can see the bear in its natural habitat in the wild, roaming free. They are so big, yet they are so graceful. In fact, did you know there are only 8 kinds of bears, and even though they look big, they are still able to run very fast and are good at climbing and swimming? Bears excite us with all the fascinating abilities they possess.

One of the more exciting things about bears is the different species that make up the bear family. For example, polar bears are a part of the bear bloodline, as are panda bears. Polar bears are large and live in cold climates. They mostly eat meat, and can weigh as much as 570 pounds! Like polar bears, panda bears are extinct; Panda’s however, eat only bamboo and are not meat eaters. Panda bears weigh up to 250 pounds. In addition to having an amazing variation in their bloodline, bears are very intelligent animals. In fact, bears have large brains making them one of the most intelligent animals. It’s claimed that they are as smart as a 3-year-old child. In addition, they have an exceptionally long-term memory. This makes them smarter then any other land mammal in existence.

As well as being smart, bears take a long sleep in the winter to hibernate. They sleep in a den with the mother and cubs. Interestingly, bears do not hibernate because it is too cold. They do so because of a lack of food in the winter. Furthermore, bears can lose 25-40% of their body weight during hibernation – burning their fat for fuel. This is because bears burn about 4,000 calories a day while living in hibernation. Moreover, black bears have been known to den in a human’s basement, without them ever knowing they had a bear for a roommate over the winter months! When we see bears at the zoo, we do not consider how truly amazing they are. They are not just big fuzzy things to buy stuffed toys of. They are quick, strong, smart, and possess characteristics other species do not. This fact makes them fun animals to study and learn more about.
